Safe Sidewalks LA is a 30 year, $1.4 billion dollar investment that the city of Los Angeles has made in order to make city sidewalks accessible to everyone. Los Angeles is notoriously a motor-city, but through this initiative, we hope to see more pedestrians taking to the newly improved and accessible sidewalks.
The key to the successful completion of this safe sidewalk commitment is making sidewalks accessible. As they stand, many of the sidewalks in Los Angeles are not suitable for people with mobility challenges. Potholes, high cubs, and broken cement all make it difficult and dangerous for people using crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs to navigate their way through the city. By making sidewalks safe for everyone (regardless of ability), the city is ensuring that the city’s sidewalks are accessible to everyone.
Los Angeles has roughly 11,000 miles of sidewalks, which is why this undertaking is projected to take three decades, and the city is relying on its citizens to speed up the process. If you notice a particularly gnarly or unsafe sidewalk in the city of Los Angeles, then you can report it right to the Safe Sidwalks LA project through a form on their website. This is a group effort and together, we can make our city more safe and pedestrian friendly for everyone who lives here and visits! So the next time you choose to walk instead of drive, keep your eyes on the pavement and take note of any areas of the sidewalk that could use a little love.
